Imaginary Theatre is a Brisbane based, non-profit company with big ideas. Founded by a collective of mainly emerging artists, Imaginary has grown into an exciting addition to Australia's theatre and youth arts landscape, with over 45,000 children and carers attending its performances since 2006. Imaginary's mission is to create world-class art for children and young people, and through a suite of performance, workshop, research and community engagement projects, stimulate imagination and creativity, promote multiple literacies and celebrate Australia's rich cultural diversity.
In the past four years the company's work has been focused on the development of innovative theatrical adaptations of the 'Tashi' stories for children by Australian author Anna Fienberg. Company members have been developing these stories since 2004, when they were first commissioned for the Out of the Box Festival. The TASHI performances have since been presented in a series of seasons for Brisbane Powerhouse, the Seoul International Children's Book Festival, the 2006 Out of the Box Festival, Merrigong Theatre Company, Brisbane Festival 2006 & 2009, the 2009 Sydney Children's Festival, 2010 South Coast Children's Festival and 17 other venues throughout regional and remote Australia.
In 2009, Imaginary Theatre Co-founder Thom Browning created his installation work Giants Among Us for Imaginary and has presented it at both Brisbane Festival's Under the Radar and at QPAC's 2010 Out of the Box Festival. The coming years will also see Imaginary Theatre produce a suite of diverse new works. A new performance projects for 2-5 year olds are underway through the Play Project research initiative, and another brand new performance for the 4-10 age group is under development in 2011/2012.
Imaginary's ambition is to gain national and international recognition as a high quality, producer of art for children and young people that promote and advocate for the role of the arts in the lives of children and young people, creating and touring it's work widely, and in doing so enriching the lives of children in Australia and across the world.
